Why We Are Donating to Charities that Support Disabled Veterans
This is a story involving my sister’s husband, Brian Wheeler, who served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War (1968-1969) on the Gearing class Destroyer USS Herbert J. Thomas. He was a Seaman during this period. In 1995, while serving as a Boy Scout Executive, he collapsed and was permanently disabled. To this day, I can clearly recall the Veteran Service Officer from the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization. His name was Paul Breuer, a wonderful guy who lived in Syracuse, NY where my sister’s family still resides today. He was a Godsend and a hero to our family. He provided above and beyond service and helped get all the benefits possible for Brian in fast order. He even fought battles with hospitals regarding treatment during this dark period. He arranged for DAV to take him to appointments. My sister, Ellen, had her hands full with 2 teenagers and Paul guided the Wheeler family through this devastating period. He truly cared about fellow veterans and their families. We will forever be grateful for what he personally did and the truly exceptional support that DAV provided. Accordingly, a portion of all sales will be donated to charities supporting disabled Veterans as a small token of our gratitude.
